The Scope of 3D Animation as opposed to 2D

Written By: Chandan Banerjee - জানু• 17•11

This is an era of 3D. Gone are the days of theme, story, sentiment and heart throbbing emotion etc. VFX effects are engulfing this film industries and animation industries as well. Micky Donald, Tom and Jerry are legendary productions but these days the 3Ds are more appealing than that of 2D. The box-office success of 3D films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Shrek and Monsters Inc has revolutionized the very concept of animated features and ad films. India can leapfrog onto the fast track in the 3D field, was once the say in the 2005, while there were lack of skilled manpower. But now the scenario has changed.
There are many renowned Animation institutes that are giving valuable Animation trainings and thus every year a lot of young , fresh Indian Animators come out and get absorbed in the on growing animation industries.
Even Philippine and Korean studios that worked as low-cost production outsourcing centres for big international media houses are finding it difficult to scale their operations from 2D to 3D. The skill-set required for 3D animation is far more intricate than for 2D and animation houses in the US, UK and Canada are on the lookout for alternative low-cost production centres for 3D animation. For the Indian animation industry this is an excellent opportunity and hopefully India is capitalizing it.
While an animator can do an entire 2D frame on his own, a team of artists have to work in synchronization to get the lighting, composition, modelling and rigging right to compose a frame in 3D. This, in turn, calls for a high degree of specialisation complemented with creative talent and computer skills.
